Meet Gloucester’s next Labour MP

I grew up under the last Labour government and it changed my life. I went from being a working class kid from Yorkshire to becoming a lawyer representing our NHS. Since then, I have fought for working class children to have the same opportunities that I did growing up. That’s why I joined the Labour Party and why I am standing to be your next MP.

After 12 years of a Conservative MP here in Gloucester, our public services are on their knees. 1 in 4 of our primary schools require improvement, 50,000 of our neighbours are waiting for NHS treatment and the cost of living crisis is forcing families to choose between heating their homes and feeding their children this winter. Gloucester was promised ‘Levelling Up’ but it hasn’t been delivered by a Tory government that is stumbling from crisis to crisis.

It doesn’t have to be like this. Under the last Labour government we delivered for people in Gloucester. A £35m rebuild of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, a new £18m University Campus, a £12m leisure centre, a £20m police HQ, a £35m new building for Gloucestershire College and a £1bn regeration of Gloucester Docks. Nationally, we introduced the national minimum wage, took 1 million children and pensioners out of poverty, improved funding for schools and brought NHS waiting lists down from 18 months to just 18 weeks.

That is the difference a Labour government can make and I want to fight for opportunities like that for families like mine here in Gloucester. A green future for our city, a good education for our kids, a thriving Health Service, affordable local housing, safer streets, secure jobs and a local economy that boosts wealth in the community.

I know that there is work to do to rebuild trust with our communities here in Gloucester. I get it. It’s not enough just to say I will be different – I need to show it. I know that I have a lot of work to do that but I promise to win your trust and put the people of Gloucester at the heart of everything I do. Because if we want to fight for a brighter future for Gloucester, we’re going to need to work together.
