Gloucester Labour Celebrates IWD & The Suffragettes

The thanks of our whole Women's Section go out to all the women who attended our Cathedral event on International Women's Day, and all members and their friends who came along to Messenger House on 10th March for our IWD and Suffragette celebratory party.

International Women's Day 2018. Ceremony to honour Suffragist and Champion of Women's education - Dorothea Beale.

On Thursday, 8th March we joined women members of the Cathedral and Cheltenham Ladies College along with our family members and friends. We were there to celebrate the life of Dorothea Beale, a campaigner for women's education and a suffragist, who is buried in the Lady Chapel. Canon Celia Thomson led the ceremony, with Rev'd Josie Goodwin speaking about Dorothea as an Educationalist, Annette Robinson our Women's Officer speaking about her as a Suffragist. We heard about her life, laid flowers at her place of burial, sang the Suffragette Anthem, and were blessed by Bishop Rachel. It was a very special day.

On Saturday, 10th March, we partied in the evening. It was an event for all members, with Suffragette Emmeline (see below picture) as guest of honour. About 40 members and friends attended, and made it a great night of celebration. Event and fundraising officer Emma supplied the music, and put a lot of work into transforming Gloucester Labour's officer at Messenger House into an atmospheric party space.

At both events we were joined by several women who expressed an interest in joining the Women's Section, and I would love to hear from any of you who would like to get more involved. So please email me with your contact details, and/or come along to our next meeting.
